A tooth that is abscessed, infected at the root, may need to be treated with root canal therapy. Now, before you experience a wave of anxiety, let us at Montrose Dental Associates assure you that root canal therapy is a smooth and comfortable process and that most patients report little or no pain at all during the procedure. Our
Verplanck dentist is committed to your dental health and modern root canal therapy is nothing you have to fear.
There are more than one possible reasons why you might develop a root canal infection. It could be due to a decayed tooth, an especially deep filling, or a tooth that is chipped or cracked. In some instances, facial trauma can result in the need for root canal therapy also. The most obvious and unwelcome symptom that indicates a root canal problem is pain. While some people can have a root canal infection and not feel pain, most often it is accompanied by severe pain when you apply pressure to the tooth or attempt to chew on it. You may also notice sensitivity to very hot or cold temperatures. Tender gums or tooth discoloration may also be present. If you experience any of these signs, you should call us right away to be examined by our
Verplanck dentist.
Root canal therapy generally requires 2 or 3 sessions. You will receive a local anesthetic to numb you for the procedure. The nerve and pulp will be removed once access is gained to the root area. Any debris will be removed and our
Verplanck dentist will clean the area before sealing it. In between sessions, you will be fitted with a temporary crown. This will protect the exposed tooth until your next appointment. It is important to know that once the nerve and root have been removed, the tooth will no longer cause you any pain. When the root canal therapy is completed, you will be measured for a permanent crown that will be created at the dental lab and then custom fit and cemented into place.
Root canal therapy permits you to retain your natural tooth and it is often the only option other than extraction. Instead of thinking of root canal therapy as being a painful experience (it isn’t), far better to think of it as the end to the pain you’ve been experiencing as a result of the infected tooth. Our
Verplanck dentist will work with you to avoid future need for root canal therapy with regular checkups, suggesting a diet that limits sugar, and recommending daily brushing and flossing.
