Verplanck dental office know how important oral health care is for our younger patients. It’s when we are young that we set the foundation for our good oral hygiene habits. And if children come in for regular treatments and cleanings we will putting them in a great position to have strong, healthy, and beautiful teeth long into their lives. Along with regular exams and cleanings, dental sealants and fluoride therapy are a good idea for children to have for healthy teeth and gums. Sealants help to prevent teeth from getting cavities, and fluoride strengthens enamel and prevents tooth decay.
At Montrose Dental Associates we recommend that children get sealants when their permanent molars come in in order to help fight cavities during the cavity-prone years, ages 6-14. It is also sometimes recommended that babies get sealants if their teeth have deep depressions and grooves. This is because baby teeth play such an important role in holding the correct spacing for permanent teeth and we want to keep these teeth healthy so that they aren’t lost too early on in the child’s development. Sealants are painted onto the tooth enamel of thoroughly cleaned teeth. They last up to 10 years but should be checked every year for chips during regularly scheduled dental exams and cleanings.
Like sealants, fluoride treatments for children make sure that the teeth are protected from decay. Using a gel formula we place teeth trays that look like mouth guards filled with fluoride over the teeth. Letting the fluoride sit and strengthen the enamel, preventing the acid erosion of teeth that is caused by problem foods like fruit, candy, and many drinks. Fluoride intake is most critical for patients between the ages of 6 months and 16 years.
