When you have missing teeth, dentures are a solution that you can count on They're a restoration option that has been around for a long time and for a very good reason: they work. There are both partial dentures, which are of use when you only have a few teeth that need to be replaced. Then there are complete dentures, which replace all of the teeth on your upper or lower jaw. At Montrose Dental Associates, we're pleased to offer you both types of dentures to give you back your full smile. And while it's true that cosmetic reasons are most often the motivation for getting dentures from our Peekskill dentist, keep in mind that when you have missing teeth, the others can shift and cause discomfort and a misaligned bite. Plus, without any teeth on one jaw, your ability to eat is severely compromised.
Partial dentures can also be called removable bridges. Our Peekskill dentist will take impressions that will then be sent off to the dental lab. They will return your dentures, which consist of replacement teeth attached to a foundation made of plastic and colored to resemble the shade of your gums. This will help them to blend in and look more natural. Your partial dentures are held in by clasps on either side that attach to the neighboring tooth on the right and left. You will also apply denture adhesive to hold them in at the gum line. You can remove your partial dentures whenever you want, including to clean them and to perform needed hygiene on your gums.
Complete dentures are very similar in how they are fashioned for you, but there are some differences. For one thing, after the last of your natural teeth have been removed on the jaw in question, there is typically a waiting period of 2 to 3 months that is required before fitting your dentures. This is because the bone and gums need a chance to heal and will naturally shrink during this time. The delay results in a more precise fit for you and fewer adjustments later. Temporary dentures may be available to wear in the interim, so just ask our Peekskill dentist.
