When patients come to our dental practice needing to have cavities treated, they will have two choices of dental fillings. We offer traditional silver amalgam fillings as well as the newer tooth -colored composite fillings. Both of these filling materials have their benefits for our patients. Our dentist will recommend which type of dental filling material will work best for you, generally depending on the size and location of the cavity. If a cavity is larger, or on the flat chewing surface of a molar, it will most likely be recommended that your Peekskill cavity treatment is finished using a silver amalgam filling. This is because this material is much stronger and less likely to chip, and can more easily withstand vigorous chewing forces. However, if you have a cavity on a front tooth, or on a tooth that shows when you speak or smile, our dentist will most likely recommend that you get a composite filling. Composite fillings are much more aesthetically appealing since they cannot even be seen once they are applied to the tooth; they will color-match the tooth completely. Tooth-colored fillings also call for the removal of less tooth enamel, and will strengthen the tooth since they are bonded to the tooth. However, some insurance companies will not pay for these filling since they can be more expensive since they take longer to install.
